ascertain exhibition

In July, I was able to join an open-theme group exhibition curated by LumiNoir Art at Espacio Gallery, Ascertain. The exhibition brought works from artists all over London to the gallery located at Brick Lane, showcasing a variety of mediums and subjects.

The work I got selected for was Encounter, the same piece I exhibited in the MA Summer Show in early July. Even though I had already exhibited it before, it was an interesting experience to be able to show it in a different context, with works and artists unfamiliar to me. I felt that, in the space and context of Ascertain, the silence present in the materiality of my work had been deepened, resulting in a moment of pause in the room. That brought the work closer to the reflection of intimacy being noted once one is able to stop to notice things that are usually unnoticed when just passing by.

Jonathan Hillson, UAL alumni and one of the curators of the show, sent me a video of an experiment with light I’ve been wanting to try for some time now with my work. The phone's flashlight was used to record the movement of the shadow that was showing in the room with the lights off. Together with the feedback I received throughout the course, this made me reflect on possibilities of adding light to my work, as the translucency allows me to create layers of shadows and, consequently, “drawings” in the space around the work. I feel very grateful that I had this opportunity to exhibit my work in a public space one more time in London.
