in-between exhibition
During Unit 2, my classmates and I applied for the Bounce Fund to hold a group exhibition at Peckham Levels. As previously explained in the Unit 2 section on the platform, our project was not selected for the funding, but we were still able to hold our exhibition in the UAL Space at Peckham Levels this year.
Right after the MA Summer Show, we started preparing the poster, the prints for the exhibition text and the installation of the works. Even though I proposed the idea of In-between and wrote the curatorial text, our exhibition was curated in a group setting, with each one of us selecting the work we wanted to show, as well as helping with ideas during the installation day.
The idea of this subject came from my own research, in which the idea of threshold came across very deeply during my studio practice and reflections during the last few months; with that, I wanted to take the opportunity to analyze possibilities of the presence of the threshold space in other people’s works, even if not mainly focused on these ideas. I thought that reflecting on my peer’s work through a lens of my own research could bring interesting perspectives about my own practice and ideas — at the same time highlighting their own particularities and practices, creating a balance between different points of view.
The only two requests for the group were for everyone to think of how the idea of in-betweenness could be manifested in their work, and to show a small scale piece, to better dialogue with the characteristics of the Peckham Levels exhibition space — which is slightly small and has a low ceiling, bringing a cozy/warm feeling to the exhibition (that was Hyeyeon Chung’s idea in dialogue with the group).
We held the exhibition from July 17th until July 19th, with the following call: In-between reflects upon the idea of limits and their possibilities of expansion. It is an exhibition that brings together works of 9 MA Drawing students that approach the same subject in a variety of perspectives. Instead of a division, we hope to evoke the in-between space as a possibility of encounter.
Each one of us was able to share, through the themes and materiality of the works, our own perceptions of the idea of limits: between stillness and movement, public and private, art and life, past and present, human and nature, reality and fiction, among others. The threshold territory became a space of encounter of a variety of personal voices.
As the coordinator and as one of the curators of this project, I believe I have put in practice professional knowledge I’ve been acquiring actively during the course so far. The experience I had in Millbank Tower in February, in Copeland Gallery in May, and in the Summer Show in July definitely helped me and our Drawing group to be able to create this exhibition from scratch. With these experiences collected from the course, we used the UAL resources in our favor, communicating and receiving great support from the Peckham Levels Team (Ana Teles and Catherine Li), and created a very suitable environment to collaborate together as a group.
