17.01.24 | Research Methods with Li Hong Liu

Li Hong Liu’s lecture was enriching in both advice about research, based on her own experience as an artist-researcher, and the ideas around her subject of research. Her PhD’s initial question, surrounding the notion of the home related to déjà-vu, between the familiar and unfamiliar, was inspiring for me. It made me realize the importance of having a main question to drive the research and how that can make it easier to focus on specific aspects to explore within both studio practice and theoretical research.

However, what impacted me the most it was to have found once again the notion of déjà-vu, which is a very interesting phenomenon of memory and perception of the world, and something I can possibly add to my own exploration of intimacy. It was also very beautiful to hear the idea of objects carrying memories and being a proof of presence. It makes me think that the everyday objects, that seem still and empty, are actually loaded with human presence and memory.

For Li Hong Liu, the exploration of the notion of home is also very autobiographical, focused on her own perspectives, which once again relates to the way I try to start from an intimate point of view that is then shared with others. As someone who is also far from home, the idea of reconstructing home while being away/in other places seems very meaningful and opens space to new forms of intimacy.
