artist's statement

In my practice, I explore intimacy through a dialogue between drawing and embroidery, focusing on the line as the main element, formally and conceptually. By considering the thread as an expansion of the drawn line, I aim to create insights about threshold territories, between exterior and interior, public and private.

A sensory relation between my body and the process is frequently present, as I aim to maintain the gesture of the continuous line of the drawing in the embroidery. There is also a focus on materiality, as I use transparency to investigate ways to show what is happening on the "inside" (back part) of the surface, between what is easily seen and what is more difficult to access. I explore states of intimacy through observation, imagination and memory, intertwined in personal and collective narratives. The idea of the "thread of life" is present, meaning that each of the bodies represented can expand and connect with others, resulting in shared experiences.

My recent practice is surrounded by the aspect of memory related to intimacy, using the representation of details as fragments in-between time, space and presence. The material exploration of tracing papers, translucent fabrics and graphite aims to relate to the fragile aspect of memory, as well as the vulnerability of sharing an intimacy. The use of lines to create the figures intends to evoke a sense of connection, and the use of the thread can be seen as a way to hold onto those moments, stitching them into my own memory.
