artist's statement
In my practice, I explore aspects of human existence, such as the sharing of intimacies and the ephemerality of personal memory, through a dialogue between drawing and embroidery, focusing on the line as the main element — formally and conceptually. By considering the thread as an expansion of the drawing line and reflecting on human experiences, I seek to bring the idea of threshold territories, between exterior and interior, public and private, presence and absence.
Through observation and memory, I try to evoke the existence of what is easily seen and what is more difficult to access, exploring this both in materiality (using transparency and layers to observe what happens on the “inside”, the back side of the surface), and in the representation of scenes from a commonplace of everyday life (people in intimate fragments of time). There is often a sensory relationship between my body and the process, as I try to maintain the gesture of the continuous line of the drawing in the embroidery.
Reflections on possible meanings and metaphors of the line, such as the idea of “thread of life”, are part of my practice, aiming for the represented bodies to expand and connect with others, resulting in shared experiences. The material exploration of tracing papers and translucent fabrics aims to evoke the vulnerability of sharing an intimacy, the fragility of memory, as well as the ephemerality of life; the use of thread, ink pen and graphite can be seen as a way to hold onto those moments, stitching and marking them into my own body and memory. The line acts not only as a division, but as connection and presence; the in-between space and the intimate space are proposed as possibilities of encounter.
